Church Revitalization

  1. presents the call and rationale for regular formative assessments of congregational life and ministry.
  2. looks at both the urgency and the resistance to formative assessments.
  3. describes the characteristics and practices of good formative assessment processes.
  4. provides a description of some of the formative assessment processes along with several stories from congregations that have utilized a specific tool.

Lancaster Mennonite Conference offers two analytical approaches for churches who want to work at congregational revitalization. The first approach provides consulting services from Conrad and Jacob Kanagy. They work with the leadership team to develop a survey, process the results with the team, and prepare a written report with recommendations. As requested, they do limited follow-up coaching.

The second approach draws on the experience and expertise of Antonio Ulloa at Eastern Mennonite Missions. Antonio administers the Natural Church Development (NCD) program of Christian Schwartz. Using personal coaching, teaching and preaching, and the analytical tools of NCD, churches gain insight into themselves and clear directions on areas of church life to improve.
